College?!?

Disclaimer: Whenever I see ?!? it makes a sound in my head like a diesel truck honking and a baby crying, all mixed together with the faint noise of a kazoo... so, ya. I hope you now understand why I titled this "College?!?"

I decided to write this post because I wanted to help out two of my dearest friends, who asked me to tell all the in's and out's of college as their graduation gift. But now I've decided this is actually just a lil pep talk for me to get through the semester.

(This is them. My friends. Who are probably the only ones who will ever read this lol.)

Sadly, I don't know anything about college really.

It's a different experience for everyone, and we all go through life at our own pace, right?

But, since this is my page on the internet, and all ya'll are going at my pace at the moment, I've decided to share some things I've learned and what's worked for me over this past year(ish) of being at Utah State University (in no particular order)...

1) Roommates can become some of your closest friends if you let them. Plus it helps to be on good terms because then you can ask for rides everywhere (I love you Abbie).

2) Put effort into your room! Make it how you want, and try to keep it clean. A clean room is easier to study in, plus it just brings overall happiness really.

3) Make your bed as often as possible. It's the best because even when you have the crappiest of days and feel like you got nothing accomplished, you can come home and remember that you DID do something--you made your bed. And then you can go and lay down on that bed. And take a well-deserved nap.

3) Take naps. They will become your best friend. Even if it's just for thirty minutes, it'll help you focus so much more throughout your day.

4) Try not to say "Haha, I'm a poor college student and I have no money" too often. WE KNOW, OKAY. Most of the people you come in contact with are in the exact. same. situation. So why you gotta state the facts, ya know? Some things are better left unsaid. <3

5) Having a Thread Wallet is a must. I promise it'll change your life. #sponsored

6) Newsflash, you no longer have to wake up at 6am every morning for school! That being said, the time you wake up will probably be dependent on your first class of the day. It's really helped me to label my alarms (M/W/F, and T/Th) so I can keep straight what time I need to wake up throughout the week.

7) It's okay to go out feeling you don't look 100% your best. You've got no one to impress here honey, everyone loves you for you.

8) Go to Institute, and don't skip it. If you're gonna skip a class, skip something like Science, or English. Institute is a blessed place, and I feel 10x more charged with the Spirit walking out of there--I can literally feel it influence my day.

9) Document things. Write in your journal. Take lots of pictures. Future you will thank you for it later.

10) It's okay to cry. It's okay if you get homesick from time to time. Just as long as you pick yourself back up, and tell yourself it's gonna be alright. College is such a unique time in your life because it's all about YOU. You gotta use that to your advantage, and live life to the best of your abilities!

11) One of my favorite things I brought with me to college is my picture box. I love looking at physical hard copies of my pictures, and I like to switch out the pictures I have hanging up every few months or so.

12) Laptops aren't like... a necessity... but it's also kind of a necessity. Ya feel?

13) Meal plans suck. Eat cold cereal as often as possible.

14) Look at college as a new beginning. Because that's exactly what it is. Have you always wanted to go by your middle name but couldn't swing it in high school? Now is the time. Always wanted to get in the habit of drinking more water? Do it. Want to stick to a better sleep schedule? Lol, you can try but I doubt it'll work out for you. Anyways, my point is, you're kind of restarting your life, and you can use that to your advantage.

15) Treat yoSELF. To a Netflix break, to a nap, to Spotify Premium, to a crepe, to a donut, to whatever you want! Who cares if you have to go without breakfast next week because you no longer have money to buy oatmeal? It's WORTH IT.

16) Don't be worried about seeing your high school friends again. If you truly want to stay in touch, then guess what? You'll stay in touch. And for all those who don't? Let them be. Appreciate the memories, support them on Instagram from afar, but don't waste time wishing for something (or someone) that isn't there. I wasted too much of my first semester on wanting things back the way they were, that I missed out on a lot of opportunities and experiences.

17) Don't let roommates (or yourself) microwave hot pockets more than twice a week, because it'll stink up your whole apartment and you'll want to gag every time you leave your room. :))))

18) Pray often.

19) Be spontaneous sometimes, it's fun. If a friend asks if you wanna do something or go somewhere, drop what you're doing and just... DO IT. Don't let homework rule your life.

20) Tell yourself that you can do it. You've made it up till this point, right?

17 Things I Don't Hate About You

Dear Grace, I literally have less than no idea of how to write this. But it's your birthday and I figure I'll get through it one way or another. Also, in case you didn't catch it (even though I know you did), the title to this post is a play-on-words of that Hannah Montana song. There are a whole lot more things that I don't hate about you, but for todays purposes I'm just sticking with 17. Because, ya know. You're 17. 1. You're hilarious. When I say you're one of the funniest people I've ever met, I mean it. Sarcasm, puns, awkward inappropriate words, random jokes, holding a stranger's hand; the list goes on forever. I can't tell you how many times you've made me cry from laughter. Being with you can literally turn my day around, and that is a quality that is rarely possessed by human beans. ;) 2.  You're smart. Like really smart. And thank heavens you are because if it hadn't been for both of us being in ACAD f...

A Toast:

*clinks champagne glass filled with apple cider* Lately I have been dwelling on the people I love and cherish in my life. Wait, no. Start again. *ahem* Sometimes I feel as if I take people for granted. Not use them, but more along the lines of just thinking their presence isn't a big deal. But it is. True friends are hard to find, and I'm probably the most luckiest person in the world to know and love as many wonderful people as I do. So here's to the people who make my day in our group convos. Here's to my family for making life exciting. Here's to the friend who gives me advice for everything. Here's to the time we chucked jello. Here's to my favorite cousin for quoting Fantastic Mr. Fox. Here's to everyone who drives me to places and makes me laugh till I cry. Here's to the time we made a music video. Here's to when we went to Texas for the heck of it. Here's to all the letters and notes given. Here's to surprise birthday lemo...

Defining Moments

People say that trials make or break us, and I full-heartedly agree. Sure, trials present stupid situations and life-changing decisions, but these are what I call "defining moments". How we respond and retaliate to adversity says a lot about our character, and who we are as a human being. It can make us or break us, and it's completely up to you. We are all unique, therefore our capacity for heartbreak and tribulation varies. For example, person A is going through a parent's divorce, and person B is battling severe illness. Person A couldn't even comprehend person B's trial, and same goes otherwise. Each trial is specific to a person's needs and potential, but each is meant to be a "defining moment". Defining moments range from all over the spectrum, and each person will continually face them throughout life. Just remember: each trial comes with a lesson, and the end product will be the most wonderful "you" possible. My defi...
